Schutzhund Helper Training

Steve has been doing schutzhund helper work since the late ‘70s. Back in the “ole days”, a lot of what new helpers learned was through trial and error and generally at the dogs’ expense. Because Schutzhund was a relatively new sport, there were very few experienced helpers to whom they could turn to for instruction. The dogs were also very different from the dogs we have today. The point is that they both learned everything they know from working dogs…ALL manner of dogs; everything from very good, to man eaters, to dogs with virtually no drive. They had to take the dogs that were presented to them and figure out for themselves what worked. That type of dog training experience is invaluable.

That is the experience they bring to the table when teaching new schutzhund helpers.

Helper training is generally done in the form of seminars, either at Steve's facility or at a club(s) that has several people who are interested in becoming helpers.
