Breed survey training
Breed survey training is one of our specialties. Whether
you have a dog that is schutzhund titled but needs a
first time or life breed survey, we can help!
Depending on the thoroughness of its previous training,
your dog can be fine-tuned and ready to go in as little
as 3 weeks to 6 weeks.
Included in the breed survey fee is the actual handling
of the dog in the Korklasse giving your dog the best
possible chance to fulfill his potential.
Whether involved in Schutzhund training or conformation
showing, if breeding working lines or show lines, should
a breeder choose to follow the SV rules for breeding
German Shepherd dogs, one of the requirements prior
to breeding is for your dog to not only have a Schutzhund
1, 2 or 3, but also to successfully complete a breed
survey. The first time breed survey is quite involved.
First, the dog must be taken around the ring as it would
be in a show and is tested for gun sureness. The judge
then takes each dog individually and it is required
to remain in a stand for a considerable length of time
while he (the judge) makes detailed notations of the
dog’s structure. In addition, the dog must be
weighed and measured, requiring it to be handled extensively
and be subjected to strange measuring tools. The bitework
the dog must perform is unique to the breed survey as
well, it’s the only place a dog encounters the
attack on the handler. The long bite or courage test
is part of the Schutzhund bitework as well.
Although to a lot of people, the breed survey seems
like it should be very easy, especially for a first
time survey.
Steve House can prepare your dog for what he/she will
encounter that day.
We offer a program that tackles any bite issues your
dog may have. These could be as simple as introducing
them to and working through the attack on the handler
or as complicated as correcting faulty training the
dog received in its past. Remember, a lot of the conformation
dogs get titled in a hurry and are pushed forward with
incomplete training.
For those dogs who may need it, we prepare them for
the ring portion as well, with ring training and exposure
to the tools and handling that they will experience
with the judge. Oftentimes we see handlers/owners/breeders
of working line dogs bring dogs into the ring completely
untrained for it. If you are going to spend the money
and go through the effort to follow the SV criteria
for breeding, it only makes sense to present your dog
to the judge trained in all facets of its performance.
The Breed Survey Training program requires us to have
your dog at our training center in Illinois for 4 to
6 weeks, depending on the dog and what is required to
prepare it. Included in the program is the actual handling
of the dog at the breed survey. The owner must pay all
entry fees and any travel expenses incurred, but the
handling for the bitework and ring work is included
in the fee.
